Repositioning Pricing in Private Higher Education: To Cut or Not to Cut, That is the Question - 2012 Chief Enrollment Officers Conference

S&K's Mary Piccioli was a presenter at the CCCU's 2012 Chief Enrollment Officers Conference held in Tucson, AZ, January 4-6.

On Thursday, January 5, Mary Piccioli presented Repositioning Pricing in Private Higher Education: To Cut or Not to Cut, That is the Question. This session examined the basic conditions and metrics that typically should exist before considering a price reduction. The role the net price calculator (NPC) may play in the decision to cut sticker price was also discussed. Regardless of whether an institution cuts or not, it must also effectively communicate your message effectively.

About this presentation: The notion of repositioning sticker price can be, at the same time, both intriguing and frightening. Senior leaders at many institutions are having discussions. Board members, too, are wondering. Should we? Is it the right approach for us? And a broader question remains - at some point, will the consumer student/family begin clamoring for it?

If the current system is broken, as some suggest, is repositioning price among the possible remedies? Will the increased transparency brought about by the NPC be the impetus for more institutions to cut price?
